The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for our area, with heat index values expected to reach between 110 to 114 degrees, and in some instances, exceed 115 degrees. These extreme conditions pose a significant risk for heat-related illnesses, especially during outdoor activities.
What does this mean for our school communities? We strongly advise everyone to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day and to wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to help keep cool and reduce the risk of heat-related issues.
Students participating in UIL activities will follow the 2024-2025 UIL Recommended Heat Protocol, which utilizes the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) to monitor environmental conditions during outdoor physical activities. WBGT accounts for temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation on the human body. Although students in physical education spend less than an hour outdoors, they adhere to similar protocols as those provided by UIL.
Our campuses are also equipped with the Perry Weather app, allowing us to actively monitor the WBGT index. Alerts will be sent to campuses when it is unsafe for students to be outside for extended periods.
VISD is committed to taking all necessary precautions to ensure the well-being of our students and staff during this period of extreme heat.
